Community Contest to Re-Name the northern section of Trend-Arlington Park

Contest to rename "Trend Village Park"

Last year a local resident asked the Community Association and Councillor Egli why Trend-Arlington Park, which spans both sides of the creek in our neighborhood, was being treated as one park when each side of the park is clearly seperate and not connected. This is an issue that has bothered a number of TACA members for a while and so we thought it would be a good opportunity to ask the City to divide this park into two parks, as it was when the neighborhood was first constructed back in the 1960's and 1970's.

In speaking with former Ward 9 Councillor Gord Hunter, he confirmed that the Trend-Arlington Park was originally two parks: The Trend Village park and the Arlington Woods park. The first of the two to be created was the Trend Village park. It was known informally to many in our community, including Gord Hunter, as "Space Park" as a result of the children's play structures that resembled spacecraft. At some point, whether during amalgamation or before, the two parks were united, despite not being connected. One can only assume this was done for administrative reasons.

For this reason TACA has decided to hold a contest to rename the former Trend Village park on the north side of the creek. We thought it would be best for residents to pick the name rather than for the community association to do it. Therefore, we have decided to hold a contest with the final vote taking place at our AGM on December 1st, 2015 Jan. 17th, 2016.

HOW IT WORKS

Step 1: Nominate a Name

To participate, residents are asked to first put forward a name to be nominated using the nomination form that can be found HERE. All submissions will be reviewed and approved by TACA. Just about all names will be accepted as long as they don't contain any profanity or are considered inappropriate. Whether you are attached to the name Space Park or think we should use this opportunity to honour some of the famous people who grew up in our community like Sandra Oh or Darren Pang, or to honour a former politician like Gord Hunter, the choice is yours. You can even vote for the park to remain as it is now: One park under one name: Trend-Arlington Park.

On the nomination form, please provide the reason(s) why you think your suggested name is the best choice. If you would like to present your idea at the AGM, please provide your contact details with the submission box on the form.

Step 2: Tell Your Friends

Once you have nominated a name, tell your friends and neighbors about the contest and TACA's AGM on Dec. 1st. Voting take place at the AGM so the more people you can get to come vote for your "Nominated Name", the greater chance you have of winning.

Step 3: Vote at TACA's Winter Carnival, Jan. 17, 2016

Join us January 17th for TACA's annual Winter Carnival where residents will be encouraged to vote for your favorite park name in addition to participating in the many family actitivities taking place. If you have nominated a name, convince as many TA residents as possible to come and vote for your choice in order to enhance your chances of winning!

If you have any questions, please feel free to email TACA President James O'Grady at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Good luck!
