Contest to Re-name North-West Side of Trend-Arlington Park

The Trend-Arlington Community Association is holding a contest to re-name the north-west side of Trend-Arlington Park, formerly known as Trend Village Park or Space Park. Today, both Arlington Woods park and Trend Village park are designated as one park on the map, but originally they were two separate parks. With no physical connection between them, they serviced residents with different needs in our community.

TACA would like to return to the original intention of these parks and is asking for your help to select an appropriate name. To participate, please visit: http://www.trendarlington.ca/index.php/blog/134-space-park-contest

Tree Forum: A discussion with the City and tree experts

To build upon the progress we made in the spring with regard to protecting Arlington Woods from corner lot divisions, TACA has invited the City of Ottawa Forestry Department to come speak to us about what’s going on with trees in our neighbourhood. Since we’ve lost a lot of white pines over the last few years and because the Emerald Ash Borer beetle has killed all of our ash trees, we thought this would be a good time to host a tree forum.

In addition to the City, we have invited a local arborist to talk about tree care, as well as a representative from the Ferguson Tree Nursery in Kemptville to talk to us about growing and planting trees from seed. With the help of our residents, TACA would like to undertake a private tree growing and planting initiative to help strengthen the white pine forest in Arlington Woods.

Interestingly, Arlington Woods was developed in 1970 out of an old growth white pine and beech tree forest that dates back to the great fire of 1870, which destroyed a great deal of Eastern Ontario, including 90% of Bells Corners.

As it happens, the City of Ottawa and Tree Ottawa have engaged in an initiative to plant 1 Million trees in the Nation’s Capital in time for Canada’s 150th Anniversary in 2017. Therefore, this is an excellent time to explore all of our options to improve the health of the trees and forest in our community.

Renewing TACA’s Constitution

Its been awhile since TACA updated its constitution. Our old constitution was typed up on legal size paper at least 30 years ago. The copy we have isn’t even dated! So, we have undertaken to bring TACA’s constitution up to date and to make some important changes to help us continue to serve the community to the best of our ability.

We would like your input before its ratification at the AGM. Please see our website for more information: TACA Constitution (changes tracked)
